Orchids of the Gerendal grace new stamps

20140423 Orchids of the Gerendal grace new stamps

Ten colourful orchids of the Gerendal have been immortalised on a new stamp series. These ten orchids are depicted on the stamps with beautiful colours and forms. Each orchid is also accompanied by a brief description. The new national stamp sheet is a PostNL initiative that was produced in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Natuurmonumenten (nature protection society).

The orchids shown on the stamps grow in the Gerendal, a nature reserve managed by the Forestry Commission. Situated in a long, dry valley in the south of Limburg, the orchid garden attracts five thousand visitors every year. 30 different species of orchids grow in the garden, blossoming in May and June.
