Quotes from historical letters on postage stamps

Postzegelvel Brieven Schrijven

The Hague, 17 August 2015 - PostNL will be issuing ten postage stamps featuring portraits and text fragments from five well-known Dutch epistolary authors.

PostNL selected the letter writers and their quotes in collaboration with the National Library in the Netherlands. The persons chosen were: the painters Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh, poet Leo Vroman, scientist Christiaan Huygens and priest, philosopher and humanist Desiderius Erasmus.

Postage stamp as inspiration

“This postage stamp sheet illustrates the rich history of letter writing in the Netherlands. The stamps show fragments from the letters by these five illustrious Dutchmen, along with the subjects they were working on at that moment. People still send letters to discuss important moments in their lives, and the new stamp sheet is meant as a source of inspiration”, according to PostNL Marketing Director Ludo Voorn.

Portraits and text fragments

Arthur Herrman and Robin Sluijs from the bureau Kummer & Herrman devoted themselves to the design of the stamps. “We gave the portraits and all of the interesting information their proper place in an exciting graphic design process. The stamp sheet is an integrated whole, in which the two stamps per letter writer are identified by their own colour, for example”, explains Herrman.

The ten ‘Letter writing’ stamps are marked ‘Nederland 1’, the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for mail within the Netherlands. The stamps will be available at all Bruna stores as well as via Collect Club Collectclub.nl. The stamps are valid until further notice.
