New stamps tell the story of the Volvo Ocean Race

Nieuwe postzegels vertellen het verhaal van de Volvo Ocean Race

The Hague, 26 May 2015 – PostNL presents the ‘Volvo Ocean Race Pit Stop The Hague 2015’ stamp sheet to mark the moment when the world-famous sailing race stops in the Netherlands. The race, the ocean and the teamwork within the sailing teams are the main focus of the stamps.

PostNL is showcasing the Volvo Ocean Race because the sailors are also staying in The Hague this year during the final leg. All seven competing teams were featured on the stamps. This includes the Dutch Team Brunel and two other teams (Team Vestas Wind and Team SCA) that also have Dutch crew members. They are shown on action snapshots from earlier legs of the race. The sailors on Team Brunel will receive the stamps during the Volvo Ocean Race Festival on 19 June.

Ludo Voorn, Marketing Director at PostNL: “The race is a long-standing tradition and is considered the toughest race in the world. It’s exceptional to see that there are almost always Dutch sailors competing. Unsurprising, in view of our long history of sailing here in the Netherlands. It was only logical for us to capture it on stamps, now that the race will be making a pit stop in the Netherlands.”

Emphasis on teamwork

The stamps were designed by Jan van Mechelen and Laurens van der Pool from ZEE strategie & ontwerp. “An easy option is to emphasise the individual sailors and the locations that are the start and finish of each leg. Instead, we opted to highlight the teamwork that is so crucial for a sailing team during a race. This approach also allowed our design to bring out the way boats move when they’re sailing,” explains Laurens van der Pool.

The Volvo Ocean Race Pit Stop The Hague 2015 stamps are marked ‘Nederland 1’, the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for mail within the Netherlands. The stamps will be available as of 26 May for as long as stocks last in Bruna shops and via The stamps are valid until further notice.
