Postage stamps as billboards
The issue comprises three stamp sheets, each with six stamps. The stamps include such images as an art piece by Jan Cremer (Hot Dog USA), a New York Yankees baseball shirt (the name ‘Yankees’ comes from the name Jan-Kees) and The Hague City Hall (designed by American architect Richard Meier).
The American-Dutch designer duo for these stamps, Ryan Pescatore and Catelijne van Middelkoop from the Strange Attractors agency, based the designs on cultural history. “This enabled us to translate the themes into contemporary images using current examples. We designed the stamp sheets to resemble a billboard, like the ones you see along American highways. There are numerous stories behind each theme, some of which are depicted on the stamps themselves, while others are described on the sheet edge,” explains Van Middelkoop.
PostNL has been issuing The Netherlands and Beyond stamp series every year since 2008, with a focus on the country’s rich history. The relationship between the Netherlands and the United States dates back centuries. The historic ties to Japan (2014), Belgium (2013), Indonesia (2012), South Africa (2011, Suriname (2010), Brazil (2009) and the Dutch Antilles and Aruba (2008) have been depicted on stamps in previous years.
These stamps are marked ‘Internationaal 1’ and are intended for mail items up to 20 g with worldwide destinations. The stamps will be available at all Bruna stores as well as via Collectclub.nl. The stamps are valid until further notice.
