Postal stamps feature birdlife on the bird island of Griend

PostNL bezorgt 6.000 pakketten met springtouwen en frisbees voor de Koningsspelen

The Hague, 8 April 2016 - This year Natuurmonumenten celebrates the centenary of protecting the bird island of Griend. This centenary was the reason PostNL decided to feature ten bird types that live on Griend on stamp sheets. Today, Mayor Bert Wassink of Terschelling as ‘Lord of Griend’ received the first stamp sheet from Mark-Jan Pieterse, PostNL’s Consumer Marketing Manager.

Griend is located between Terschelling and Harlingen. For the ‘Griend: Birds of the Wadden Islands’ stamp sheet, artist Erik van Ommen chose to feature the birds in his own characteristic way. Each bird portrait was painted especially by him using oil paint on wooden panels. “You see a bird posing for a portrait, breeding on its nest, walking along the tide line, eating or flying up in the air. This allows the bird to dominate the image. The Griend nature as backdrop gives each stamp the right atmosphere”, explained Van Ommen.

Historic value on a stamp

Mayor and ‘Lord’ of Griend, Bert Wassink, is proud of Griend and of the new stamps. “Hopefully this will bring Griend to life for many Dutch citizens. I am delighted that this stamp sheet enables us to pass on the historic value of Griend to each other via mail.”

New birdwatcher season

Two birdwatchers from Natuurmonumenten (Dutch Nature Preservation Society) live on the island during the summer months. Regional Director, Wilfred Alblas spoke with both birdwatchers prior to their departure to the island. “Thanks to you, tens of thousands of breeding birds can raise their young in peace on Griend. Some only breed in a few places in Europe, including Griend. This is what makes your work so special and so important.”
