New “Beautiful Netherlands” stamp series shines a spotlight on fishing communities

The Hague, 1 February 2016 – Five typically Dutch fishing towns will be showcased this year in the Beautiful Netherlands stamp series. On 1 February, PostNL will issue stamps featuring the towns of Zoutkamp, Volendam and Urk. The stamps will depict various characteristic objects from these fishing communities. Later this year, stamps will also be issued featuring Arnemuiden and Scheveningen, in addition to a collection sheet with the five fishing towns.

Since 2005, PostNL has issued the “Beautiful Netherlands” stamp series each year to provide insight into our country’s local history and cultural wealth. For the images of the “Beautiful Netherlands” 2016 series, the designer couple Ingmar and Carla Birza wanted to zoom in on the specific features of both the local fishery industry and the towns themselves.

Typical elements of the fishing communities

PostNL Marketing Director Ludo Voorn on the stamps: “It’s impressive how Ingmar and Carla Birza used iconic images of the fishing communities to shine a spotlight on these towns. The focus is on history.”

The five fishing communities were selected by PostNL, the Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage and the designers. The five different Zoutkamp, Volendam and Urk stamps are marked ‘Nederland 1’, the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for mail within the Netherlands. These stamps in the Beautiful Netherlands series will be sold starting 1 February at PostNL retailers in the relevant municipalities and via The stamps are valid indefinitely.
