In recent months the Dutch Photography Museum started on the restoration of the colour photographs by Ed van der Elsken, who died in 1990. Through this, the first of his colour photographs will be preserved and displayed to the public. PostNL was inspired by the restoration work to feature his characterful colour photographs on stamps.
People in streetscapes
Eddy Posthuma de Boer was friends for years with Van der Elsken. He is now guest curator of ‘The collection exposed’, one of the new exhibitions at the Dutch Photography Museum. Posthuma de Boer says of the stamp sheet: “I often went out with him. The thing that distinguished him was that he always wanted to capture the streetscape with contemporary and personal photography. I’m happy that a number of iconic photos from his first and most famous colour photo book from 1977, ‘Eye Love You’, are featured in the stamp sheet."
New stories on stamps
Ludo Voorn praises the work of Van der Elsken, photographer of people. “Extraordinary people are well reflected on this stamp sheet. The designers, Marco Stout and Evelyne Kramer, have used black surfaces to make it look as if the stamp sheet consists of five film strips with stories.”
The ten ‘Ed van der Elsken Dutch Photography Museum’ stamps are marked ‘Nederland 1’, the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for mail within the Netherlands. The stamps are available at all Bruna stores as well as via collectclub.nl. The stamps are valid until further notice.
