PostNL will also be issuing a Beautiful Netherlands series, this time dedicated to special country houses in the Netherlands. A country house, known as a buitenplaats in Dutch, is a large house or mansion, often with outbuildings, that forms a harmonious whole with a surrounding garden or park. Examples include Mattemburgh and Vollenhoven. Long ago this sort of summer residence was an important phenomenon in the Netherlands where, especially in what is now the Randstad conurbation, it embodied the special bond between town and country. It is estimated that, since their arrival in the 17th century, some six thousand country houses of varying sizes have been built in the Netherlands. Of this number a mere ten percent, or around six hundred remain today. These remaining houses are distributed throughout the Dutch provinces.
