A colour photograph of two animals, mostly a mother and her young, is shown on each stamp. The photos were taken by both professional photographers and by zookeepers from Burgers’ Zoo. Each stamp has a different background, consisting of sections of plans of Burgers’ Zoo throughout its history. The section corresponds with the location of the respective species at the time, often marked with small animal illustrations on the plan.
If the stamps are scanned with the Chameleon eXplorer app on a smartphone, a variety of background information on Burger’s Zoo can be viewed via the Internet.
Designer Harald Slaterus: "Designing stamps is the greatest fun there is. It is because of the size of course, the print run and also its perpetualness, because you know your stamp will be kept in albums all over the world." Besides, there are several reasons that make Harald the logical choice to design these stamps: "I live in Arnhem, for instance, I studied at the art academy here, and during my studies I often went to Burgers' Zoo to draw animals. I grew up with stamps. My grandfather collected them, and my father and I still do."
Harald Slaterus designed the 100th Anniversary KNLTB stamps in 1999 and the Comic Strip Stamps in 2000. Harald also made the lay-out of the book that will be published on the occasion of the first centennial of Burgers' Zoo.
The stamps are available at Bruna outlets, the Collect Club in Groningen and online via www.postnl.nl/collectclub. The stamps have an indefinite term of validity. The designation on these stamps is 'Nederland 1', which means that they are for items of mail weighing up to 20 grams destined for addresses in the Netherlands.
In addition to the sheet with ten different stamps, there are two stamp booklets, a so-called 'prestige booklet' as well as two first-day covers.*
