For now, Posthuma prefers not to reveal too much about the design for the December stamps, except that it involves a 'very traditional Dutch' design. Those unable to contain their curiosity can visit the exposition Een vijver vol inkt. Kleur je wereld met Sieb Posthuma [A pond full of ink. Colour your world with Sieb Posthuma] at the Kinderboekenmuseum [Children's Book Museum] in The Hague. A replica of Posthuma’s studio forms part of the exhibition. Here, over the coming weeks, parts of the stamp design will be regularly unveiled until the ultimate design gradually becomes clear.
Arno van Bijnen, Commercial Director of PostNL, is also thrilled that Posthuma will design this year’s December stamps: "Sieb is one of the Netherlands most prominent illustrators. We are incredibly proud that he will apply his creativity and talent to this year’s December stamps, issued especially for sending Christmas cards."
Don't be afraid of small areas
Posthuma is honoured to be asked to design the December stamps this year. He already designed the Children’s Welfare Stamps in 2000, with 'child and adventure' as theme. "I learned from this that you needn’t be afraid of small areas; you just need to go for simple shapes with sufficient colour contrast. Then expressiveness will be retained even on something the size of a stamp", said the designer.
The new stamps will be available from 19 November 2013 for as long as stocks last, from all post offices, via www.postkantoor.nl and via www.collectclub.nl. The sheetlets with twenty December stamps will cost €11 each this year. The special December rate of €0.55 per stamp is valid from 19 November 2013 to 6 January 2014. On purchasing three sheetlets, customers will receive a home diary gift, also designed by Sieb Posthuma.
