PostNL starts installing Parcel Lockers at main NS stations and Schiphol

The Hague, 29 October 2014 - This week, PostNL started installing Parcel Lockers, which PostNL will be working with at 9 main NS stations within a few weeks. Customers can pick up parcels from the Parcel Lockers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Parcel Lockers are located at the Amsterdam Central, Rotterdam Central, Den Haag Central, Utrecht Central, Schiphol Plaza, Breda, Eindhoven, Leiden and Almere Centrum train stations.

The station in Almere already had a PostNL Parcel Locker, which was used to test this new service. The successful pilot showed that 89% of users were very pleased or completely satisfied with the service and that 95% of the people who used the Parcel Locker once will do so again in the future. The Parcel Lockers are easy to use and are all to be installed at central locations. Over 400,000 travellers pass through these NS stations every day.

Installation

Installing the Parcel Lockers will take a few weeks, as both the mechanical aspects and the IT have to be coordinated perfectly. All Parcel Lockers are fitted with a security system and surveillance cameras. The Parcel Lockers will be up and running in the week before Sinterklaas.

How does it work?

In webshops that offer the Parcel Locker option, customers can select the option to deliver to a Locker directly when placing an order. For orders supplied by senders who do not yet have the Parcel Locker option, customers can re-route shipments themselves on mijnpakket.nl. This means changing the delivery address to a Parcel Locker of the customer’s choice so that the parcel is sent directly to the locker.
The addressee receives a text message containing a unique opening code when the parcel has been delivered to the locker. This opening code is linked to the customer’s mobile telephone number, ensuring that only the rightful owner has access to the locker.
Parcels can be picked up on working days after 3:00pm. After 24 hours, if the parcel has not yet been collected, the customer is sent a reminder text message.
After 3 days, uncollected parcels are automatically brought to a Post office or Parcel Point near the Parcel Locker. After that, the addressee will have 21 days to pick up their parcel. In the future, customers will also be able to send parcels via the Parcel Locker. They can then pay for the shipment online at onlineverzendservice.nl and after registering the parcel, simply leave the parcel in the respective bin of the Parcel Locker.

Location network

In addition to the introduction of Parcel Lockers, we started multiple pilots this year with Parcel Points for companies including Gamma and Karwei where parcels can be collected, sent and returned. Consumers order more and more online and like to receive and ship parcels at their own convenience. PostNL is providing more and more locations for them to do so. PostNL has the ambition to expand and become a network with 3,000 Parcel Points.
