PostNL expands emission-free delivery in Dutch city centres

Delivery within Amsterdam’s A10 ring road now fully electric

The Hague, 15 July 2025 – PostNL is delivering parcels in an increasing number of Dutch city centres using electric vehicles. Since the start of this year, PostNL has been delivering completely emission-free in 27 city centres across the Netherlands, well above the 14 cities where this is now legally required. As of today, PostNL also delivers emission-free throughout the entire area within Amsterdam’s A10 ring road, an area 3.5 times larger than the city’s official zero-emission zone.

In addition to the 14 cities with designated zero-emission zones such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven and Tilburg. PostNL also delivers emission-free in 13 other city centres, including Almere, Breda and Enschede. And not just in city centres: electric delivery is increasingly being used in surrounding areas as well.

30% of last-mile delivery now emission-free

“Currently, 30% of our last-mile delivery across the Netherlands is emission-free, and that number continues to grow,” says Linde Jansen, CFO at PostNL. “Expanding the number of zero-emission delivery zones is fully aligned with our sustainability ambition. By 2030, we aim to deliver entirely emission-free in both the Netherlands and Belgium from our final sorting centre all the way to the doorstep. Leading the way in Amsterdam is an important milestone on that journey.”

Step by step

The transition to electric delivery goes far beyond simply replacing vehicles. It also requires smart charging infrastructure, new route planning based on vehicle range, and attention to the daily routines of delivery drivers. Grid congestion is also becoming a growing challenge, as charging is not always possible everywhere or at all times. That’s why PostNL is scaling up emission-free delivery step by step, with careful consideration for what is locally, technically and practically feasible.

Over 1.5 million electric kilometres per month

PostNL’s electric fleet including light electric freight vehicles, electric delivery vans and trucks, now covers more than 1.5 million kilometres per month. This translates to an annual CO₂ reduction of 4,045.5 tonnes the equivalent of the yearly emissions of over 500 Dutch households. Electric delivery not only benefits the climate, but also improves air quality and liveability in local communities.
