Mail in the Netherlands

Reliable, affordable and accessible

We’ve been delivering mail in the Netherlands for over 220 years. Over the years we’ve expanded, overhauled and improved our network. Each letter follows a carefully planned route, to ensure we deliver it on time and at the right place.

Mail for everyone

Everyone in the Netherlands must be able to receive post, as set down in the universal service obligation (USO). The Dutch government has tasked us with carrying out this USO, which means that:

  • We pick up and deliver post five days a week
  • We do the same for mourning and medical post six days a week
  • Everyone must have a mailbox and PostNL point close to where they live
  • At least 95% of mail is delivered the next day

A single, strong Dutch postal network is key for us to do this in the best possible way and keep the postal service reliable, accessible and affordable for all. And that’s why the Sandd network joined ours on 1 February 2020, making PostNL the sole deliverer of mail in the Netherlands.

Latest trends: more cards and parcels fitting into post boxes

It seems the Covid-19 crisis has made us all a little more thoughtful. We’re sending more cards, buying more stamps and using a stamp code more often. Parcels that fit into post boxes are also a big hit. Think gifts such as flowers, messages with small gifts and business gifts. But second-hand clothes increasingly also get sent by mail on the back of emerging online marketplaces.
